As a new Upland hunter, I've found the pinch collar to be an invaluable tool in my dog training journey. In the Fall of 2020, I ventured into this sport and brought home my first GSP on November 25th, 2020. Being unfamiliar with Upland hunting, I was eager to learn and train my dog for bird hunting.
Since I didn't have any Upland hunters in my immediate circle, I decided to participate in a service project at a Pheasant farm. It was during this experience that I had the opportunity to meet Doug, a friend, mentor, and experienced dog trainer. And since then, I have made some new friends. All of which have helped me in different ways.
We commenced training my GSP when she reached 7 months of age. I distinctly recall purchasing my first pinch collar, although I didn't have much knowledge about the different options available. Initially, I bought one from Amazon, but over time, I realized its flimsiness and the thinness of the leather. I also explored other metal options, but they didn't offer the desired aesthetics or the ability to release the pinch when there was slack on the rope.
Enter the Birdbeastie collar—a collar that embodies the characteristics of the original designs used by the legendary Upland hunters Bill West, Mo Lindley, and Bill Gibbons. This custom-made collar is proudly manufactured in the USA and boasts a springy feel, half-inch thick leather, exceptional durability, and the ability to release pressure when there is slack. It is my collar of choice, providing the functionality and reliability needed for effective dog training.
When I started training my first GSP, I encountered a common challenge—she would constantly pull forward, creating a struggle during our training sessions. Initially, my instinctive reaction was to pull back, but it didn't yield the desired results. That's when I discovered the effectiveness of a pinch collar in helping her to slow down and guide her towards the desired behavior.
Once dogs comprehend how to respond to pressure, transitioning to an e-collar becomes remarkably easy. With this understanding, they can associate the pressure with specific features of the e-collar, ultimately leading to more enjoyable hunting experiences for both the dog and the handler.
